The Tropical Islands

The Light in Aquala

Chapter 8 · The Massive Neon Tree

The tree was immense, incredibly ancient.

Its trunk was a massive pillar, its bark thick and scored with centuries of grooves. Huge roots snaked outward, disappearing into the earth. The top of the tree seemed to touch the heavens, but it was not the size that stole their breath. They had seen this tree before before.

It was the Neon flowing through it!

Veins of Neon coursed through the tree like liquid lights, moving beneath the bark in steady rhythms, almost like a heartbeat. The colors shifted and flowed, from electric blues to searing pinks and vibrant greens that spiraled up the trunk.

The leaves were alive with Neon, each leaf glowing with incredible colors, lighting up the entire tree. They watched as the Neon flowed and changed, traveling up from the roots, branching out into even the smaller and smaller veins of the leaves.

Mara had gone completely still, her notebook that she had hastily unpacked now forgotten in her hands.

Lena reached out, her fingers hovering near to the bark, close enough to feel the coolness radiating from the Neon veins. She didn't touch it, afraid that whatever happened to the tree could happen to her, and that it might be irreversible.

Lena finally spoke, her voice barely a whisper, cracked with wonder.

"Mara... what is this?"

Mara couldn't answer. They turned to each other, their faces bathed in the shifting Neon glows from the tree, and their eyes held the same expression of complete amazement.

The jungle around them had fallen silent. The cicadas had stopped their droning and even the birds were quiet. Suddenly, a gentle breeze started blowing towards them from the direction of Aquala, slowly growing in strength.

It was as if the entire jungle was holding its breath, waiting to see what they would do next.
